+ The Ultimate Minus World Guide

"I pity the fo- Oh whatever.

Word. I first started this back in September 97 and I wasn't sure if the minus world even existed. I had only had my site up for a couple of months and I was fascinated with all of the super mario glitches. This section was started to prove once and for all the minus world's existance.

After seeing snapshots and reading chocob0's excellent guide, I became aware that the minus world does indeed exist. What follows are some articles and nesticle saves showing everything from the minus world itself, to movies showing how to access it.

First you're gonna want to read

chocob0's excellent minus world article

Next up for the technically inclined:

Barubary's explaination of the minus world.

Barubary had this to say.. "this document is somewhat technical although it is all verified by looking at a disassembly, so this is all provable. thanks to CrASH_Man and harmony7... (crash_man is harmony7's brother). their work on "mario 4" helped a fuckload, and this is really both our discoveries."

Now for some nesticle movies. grab Nesticle

Check out imp_blank's nesticle movies of him going into the minusworld. These were recorded on nesticle version .42.

There's also a few rumours about jumping the flagpole...
Can you really jump the flagpole? Scott the "D-man" says yes! Check out this e-mail he sent me along with a snapshot of hime jumping over the flagpole. Is it real or was the game genie involved? You decide...

jumping the flagpole -- d man style

Here's what I had back in 97, a little write up about the minusworld and methods of accessing it.

1985--the world is in awe of a new video game system that would eventually launch some of the greatest websites of all time. While playing super mario brothers for the millionth time a rumour arises about something called a "minus world." It is suposedly a secret world in the game that was only accesible by breaking certain blocks in World 1-2. The rumour is dismissed as a hoax just like the "jump the flagpole" trick. No one actually sees it done... instead its accomplished by "a friend of a friend" or other vague source. Until eventually we find out....

the minus world really exists.

But how do we access this world

Minus World --- glitch or a secret world?

Many people believe its a glitch in the game because you can't leave the minus world once you're there..
at the top of the screen where it says your world number it says -1
others believe that it was purposely put into the game. Here is one way to supposedly access the minus world..

In world 1-1 at the end with the pipe: you break every brick on the ceiling, by jumping, except the very last one. (The one beside the top of the pipe). The next step is tricky. You stand on top on the pipe entrance at the very edge. Now pretend that the single brick beside the pipe is a pipe entrance. Crouch down and jump up, then curve Mario into the make believe pipe entrance. ***You can't break the brick*** If successful, Mario will automatically run through the wall into the bonus room where three new warps are. One of the three is the minus board. The middle one is warp to 5-1. Have fun, The ultimate Nintendo Gamer in ONTARIO!

Hi there! It's me again. The linkster. I called a Game Counseler about the minus world once. He said nothing about breaking any blocks. Did you other? That's what he said you had to do. Basically, you jump and turn around very fast, so the momentum carries you backward. Stand on top of the pipe and jump (backward) toward the wall. I've still never done this, and neither had the guy I spoke with. I'm just contributing this so the learning of one can become the knowlege of all.... kind of like the Borg. RESISTANCE IS FUTILE.

Yes...Accessing the "Minus World" in SMB1 is possible. I know; it's hard to believe without actually seeing someone do it.

Anyways, this is the way to get to the minus world. At the very end of 1-1, there'll be the pipe that takes you above ground. Starting from the _second_ block from the pipe, break that one and the to it's left. This will leave the block closest to the pipe unbroken.

Now, with Mario(or Luigi) facing left, jump backwards and push his head against the side of this lone brick. It will take you a while, but eventually(it took my two lives to do it the first time) your head will get stuck in the brick and you'll be carried to the right through the blocks. Go down the leftmost pipe.

Important Note: This will not work on Super Mario All-Stars. You can get your head stuck and move to the left; however when going down the pipe you'll warp normally.

To wrap this all up, until you actually get this to work, you'll think everyone that tells you about it is on crack.

Fear not, for I am here, and I have brought the answer thou seekest. The truth about the Minus World is that it DOES exist, and it is accessed by the method described by fellow Canadian Dave Standish earlier.

Breaking blocks is in fact important to the trick (all except last). Of course, what Dave didn't specify (but link was hinting to) was that Mario should face left during his jump so that if the trick works it looks like Mario's moonwalking through the wall.

Jump to the left (while ducking) and "hook" the jump over to the right so he "enters" the block horizontally. This is EXTREMELY difficult to acccomplish but it CAN BE DONE. You may even run out of time a few times before getting it, but don't give up. Although I've done it before, my recent attempts have been failures. Guess I'm not as patient as I used to be!
